» pink101 - Fond Memories

.
I have many fond memories from my childhood surrounding my family's relationship with the church we attended--an independent Fundamental Baptist Church.
.
One of the most fondly remembered were those New Year's Eve Watch Night programs. Our church structure was a knock down building. A traveling evangelist of the early 1930s had brought it in on the flat bed of a train and had set it up next to the railroad tracks in the middle of town. The evangelist went bankrupt in our town and our struggling little group got title to it and a lease on the property for 99 years at a dollar a year. It had sawdust floors and benches made from 2 by 4s and 1 by 10s for seats and backs. It was meager; but a pretty good size.
.
Gradually the building was improved and one year we had a cement floor poured in and a wall built midway from the front to the back so the space was divided in two.
.
About 4 times a year, we had a potluck dinner. We set up in the back part of the church. On New Year's Eve, we played games, sang songs, gave testimonies, listened to the preacher, talked and generally had a good time. The food was always the best. It seems like Baptist women are all good cooks. And, we stayed at church until the New year was rung in and the preacher gave us a prayer of blessing and we all went home.
.
Happy New Year to Everyone
.

Maybe there are only a few people in the world that would appreciate your good little post here. Most die like flies within the hour. No array of arguments can dispel the effect of looking to the heart and the slow, wide movement of feet planted in a poetic place.

Hope you had an enjoyable trip. Was it your annual trek to Central America?

Almost as good to spend a few days on the Texas Gulf Coast, wandering about looking at God's nature. It fills the mind and can multiply more in my thought than the attempt to be a prince in the kingdom of library cards. I saw dolphins in the wild which may have been porpoises, but I don't like to think of them as smaller and almost undefined fish. I think anyone who had the chance to say they viewed a dolphin would fudge a little if they came a little close to a porpoise. And great care was taken by my group to stay far enough away to leave the matter unresolved.

My old church in Northern VA used to do a similar thing back during my high school days. It was fun.

My church now is gathering at a family's house this evening for a time of fellowship and - of course - food.

Eating is - and always will be - a Baptist tradition. :-)

» Brother_Jones - Annual predictions...song of fools.

It doesn't take much of a prophetic forecast to predict the political nature of most men. The majority of hawkish Prostestant Republicans will attempt to proclaim their christianity in terms of a warrior winner who reclaims the title of world dominance by observing the rules of the Superman theme, 'truth, justice and the American way.'

And the leading Liberals will continue to distance themselves from Jesus and spend their time quoting Socrates, Jefferson, Franklin, Lincoln, and Paine. Their children may pose the question, "What about that Jesus guy?" And the Liberals will shrug their shoulders and come back with something rather lame and tame like, "What about Him? Do you want to grow up and be like Fallwell, Robertson, Dobson, and Jesus?"
Stop asking about Jesus, little one.

'Stop asking about Jesus, little one.' needed to be included in the quotes and belongs to the Liberal description. I had to dash off to my morning preparations of cleaning and bathing and I regret the error.
