» PhiloProf - I disagree with Censoring
Regardless of my belief system I agree with your statement that the censoring of Veggie Tales in wrong. In fact it violates the 1st ammendment.
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

- I disagree with Censoring
Well...I'm torn on the legality of censorship in this context.
As a free-market capitalist, I'll grant that NBC, as a corporation, has the right to make decisions on its programming choices. Not sure the First Amendment applies to them, except...
As a citizen, I am still undecided on the notion of the "public airwaves" (and THAT is a huge debate there - big can of worms).
My beef with NBC isn't so much a First Amendment issue as it is a commercial art issue. The "Veggie Tales" is a Christian cartoon series. If NBC is going to broadcast them, then it should do so - as they are. It's one thing to edit a movie for graphic sex scenes, but to edit a cartoon for religious purposes (when you've already made the decision to PURCHASE the cartoon - knowing what it is)...that doesn't make any sense to me.

- I agree, Pink, but...
Like I said, as a free market capitalist, I support NBC's right to determine its programming and edit that programming to its heart's content. That is not my beef - although I retain an open mind :-) on the "public airwaves" component of this discussion.
My big beef is on WHY NBC would feel it necessary to edit "Veggie Tales." From an artistic and commercial standpoint, it makes no sense to me - other than the possibility that NBC is institutionally biased against Christianity.

I agree. It's like doing a documentry on Charles Darwin without mentioning his theory of Evolution.

Everyone in this discussion should take a look at the documentary called "This movie is yet Unrated" It disusses the rating system of the movie industry. THe process works like this...
You submit a movie, they view it and say you have to much ... in it. They do not tell you what to cut out, so you then become your own censor/editor.
You resubmit the movie and then they may or may not pass it on.
If a movie is controversial or frowned upon by the movie industry they can slap a NC17 on it and that kills the distribution of it.
What is funny about this movie is that, guess what, the Rating Group rated it NC17!
Once you see the movie please let me know what you think.
