- Defending Falwell (sort of)
Well....I've met Jerry Falwell. I've heard him preach several times. I've read his autobiography. I know people that know him or have known him, including many that worked with him closely.
Take this for what it's worth, but the real Jerry Falwell is different than the caricature of Jerry Falwell that is routinely hammered by those who disagree with him.
I will admit that he's made some crazy comments and allowed himself to get far too hostile toward the Clintons. And, most especially, he's just not very savvy when it comes to the sound byte culture that we live in today.
Billy Graham and Rick Warren are far better representatives of conservative Christianity than Falwell. (By "conservative," I mean theologically so - not necessarily politically).
So, I'm not defending Falwell overall. I'm just asking you all to appreciate that he's not the ogre so many think.
Don't any of you all have a relative that shoots off at the mouth and/or has some rather strong viewpoints - but, in his heart and in most every area of his mind as well, is a great guy??? Surely, you know people like that. Well, that's Jerry Falwell.
