Here is my take on this. I agree that the topic of Hillary stirs up some pretty strong emotions - "lightning rod" if you will. The biggest problem I see is that some of the most outspoken voices of the Christian faith have nothing but negative to say about whomever they perceive as the enemy.
I believe that if the world could see Christian voices standing up in love for even those who are not easy to love, the fact that we are all sons and daughters of God, Christianity might not be seen as so uncaring and judgemental.
Are you familiar with What's So Amazing about Grace by Phillip Yancey or Don Miller's books? I love the part in Blue Like Jazz when he talks about the most loving and accepting group he had ever met in his life - they were not Christians but basically "hippies". His books I think are a good wake-up call for the fact that Christians have a long way to go to be "Christ-like" to the world.

I agree w/ you. But in this particular case, Falwell was speaking at a conservative political fundraiser. He was, in a sense, preaching to the choir. Of course, he IS a public figure and his remarks often wind up in the news - usually taken out of context, so he should be wiser to that probably.
I love Yancey's work. Haven't read Miller. I suppose I"ll have to check him out.

Keep in mind that Donald Miller is not (or should not be) a role model of the Christian faith. He admits to asking questions and stumbling on occasion. However he writes poetically and his work undoubtedly can appeal to even non-believers. He is great about waking us up from slumbering a bit on the issue of speaking "truth in love" to the world. I have never met anyone who has not enjoyed his very thought-provoking books.

I am not a Clinton fan these days either. But I think that my point is not getting through. Regardless of how any of us feel about Bill and Hill, or most politicians for that matter, what ever happened to "Love your enemies, do good to those who hate you, bless those who curse you, pray for those who mistreat you?" It's the message of "hate" that comes from so-called Christians that I disagree with. Has Jerry Falwell or similar religious leaders ever asked believers to pray for the Clintons or anyone else on the "other side?" I wonder.
When Jesus walked the earth, he did not fraternize with the religious leaders of the day. He had a heart for those who were lost, misunderstood, forgotten. For those who were struggling, not for those who believed they already had the answers and looked down on everyone else.
I believe it's Phillip Yancey's book that talks about how Jesus would be walking into a gay bar and sharing a drink and offer hope to a lost soul if he were here today.
Those are the kind of religious leaders we need to hear more from. A message of hope and salvation for the lost, in whatever place we may find them.

brendapreg,
I agree with you. Jesus would be ministering to gays, lesbians, transvestites, drug addicts, prisoners, the homeless, motorcycle gangs, street thugs, and on and on. He would be speaking with them lovingly and courageously.
I just don't think Falwell should be slammed for his Hillary / Lucifer comment in the way that he is, because I'm sure he didn't mean it the way a lot of folks are taking it. But that doesn't negate YOUR point - a point I agree with wholeheartedly.

- Hate & Love
I guess we will have to agree to disagree. And we do agree on the big things obviously! ![]()
Maybe it's just the association I have with anything Jerry Falwell says. I personally find it difficult to love a person who makes it a habit to speak a message of hate. (Maybe I need to pray for HIM ... or atleast ask God to give me understanding because I find it hard to believe that anyone who calls himself a Christian is so hate-filled.)
But I guess I get back to the fact that you don't hear the same type of hate messages from people like Jimmy Carter or Billy Graham.
I have a hard time justifying comments like his.
