» Feature Writer Brian Tubbs - Defending Falwell (sort of)

In response to Falwell posted by pink101:

Well....I've met Jerry Falwell. I've heard him preach several times. I've read his autobiography. I know people that know him or have known him, including many that worked with him closely.

Take this for what it's worth, but the real Jerry Falwell is different than the caricature of Jerry Falwell that is routinely hammered by those who disagree with him.

I will admit that he's made some crazy comments and allowed himself to get far too hostile toward the Clintons. And, most especially, he's just not very savvy when it comes to the sound byte culture that we live in today.

Billy Graham and Rick Warren are far better representatives of conservative Christianity than Falwell. (By "conservative," I mean theologically so - not necessarily politically).

So, I'm not defending Falwell overall. I'm just asking you all to appreciate that he's not the ogre so many think.

Don't any of you all have a relative that shoots off at the mouth and/or has some rather strong viewpoints - but, in his heart and in most every area of his mind as well, is a great guy??? Surely, you know people like that. Well, that's Jerry Falwell.

Brian,
Ok - point taken.

I definitely can agree that the public personna of a person can be very different than the private one.

I have also been "mis-quoted" by media many times so I suppose I can relate to that as well.

As well as the relatives analogy - good one - and yes I think I can picture those people... who shall remain nameless.

Since we're name dropping, I have met Bill and Hillary a number of times, although I do not claim to know either of them personally.

I just hope no one starts saying bad things about me now... ;)

I appreciate your comments, and as we both acknowledge, Falwell isn't the main issue here. YOUR baseline argument that Christians should exemplify love and humility still stands.

It is difficult, though, because we are all so.......human. :-)

Yes - we are human.

I also realize that I have a tremendous amount of patience for those who do not know the Lord (since I KNOW they are blinded) than I do for other Christians. It's not a good thing since we all need forgiveness from one another.

I am always thinking about how the world sees us - do they see us as loving servants or do they see us as judgemental haters of anyone who thinks or acts differently?

One of my basic prayers is that anyone who sees me or meets me will see Christ in me. That would be the most fulfilling thing I could imagine in life.

Pressing toward the mark?
.
I've been hearing that lately.
.
Have you ever hear this song?
.
"Be like Jesus, this my song
In the home and in the throng
Be like Jesus all day long!
I would be like Jesus!"

(Words public domain)
.
There are some strong confusions developing regarding the use of the name, Christ, and the person, Jesus. The use of the name, Christ, has become code.
.
Can you respond to my curiosity here?

Yes - I just heard that song recently on the radio.

Here is my take on your comment about Jesus versus Christ....

I use both names interchangeably, but Jesus seems to me more personal, more intimate. He was Jesus THE Christ. Jesus was his given name, whereas Christ is a title.

Yet Christ is more of a general term, like Lord, if you will. And it seems more acceptable somehow. Almost like God in a way - so many people use the term God but what God are they talking about?

The name of Jesus is powerful - ruffles more feathers, doesn't it? Jesus says "I am the way!" (Not just any old god is the way.)

Is that what you were getting at???

Curious.... ?

What about the term God versus Father or Abba?

We should start a new topic anyway.

» pink101 - Does O.T. Theology Prophesize

In response to Your baseline point still stands posted by brendapreg:
.
The title, Christ, stands for Mesiah--the human who appears in time to redeem the Holy Land--a being proclaimed by the priesthood.
.
Jesus is a human person who is crucified after having brought a message to the people that God lives within us rather than in a physical building and who can only be accessed by the priesthood.
.
Does O.T. theology prophesize a man will appear who will bring a gospel that proclaims each person can have an individual and personal relationship with God? If it does, can you give us the references?
.
