Violence in Our Society

What the Mall and Church Shootings Say about America

Shootings at a mall and at two religious sites in recent days have left many Americans wondering about the state of our society.

Where can you take your family and be safe these days? That was the question asked by one of my church members this weekend. Is there any place safe?

There was a time when going to church was considered a pretty safe thing to do. Maybe not the most "comfortable" thing to do - especially if some things in your life needed straightened out. But it was generally regarded as safe. Not so much anymore, with the Colorado shootings fresh in our minds.

And shopping at the mall? Why, what better way for a family to spend an afternoon, especially during the Christmas shopping season? And safe? You bet!

I realize, of course, that shoppers and churchgoers are still pretty safe - at least according to probable odds and statistics. And, of course, as a Christian, I will say that our lives are in God's hands anyway. Still....

There is an unease in our nation today, as a result of these shootings.

What's the answer?
