Pray for Britney Spears

Taking Pity on a Self-Destructing Celebrity

It's time for Americans to stop enjoying the demise of Britney Spears, and start praying for her instead.

I don't mean to sound trite, but it's time Americans stop reveling in and celebrating the downward spiral that is Britney Spears' life.

News coverage, Internet rankings, and surveys reflect those things most important to Americans (and westerners in general, for that matter). And Americans love celebrity scandals. We seem to enjoy watching celebrities in the limelight self-destruct in the same way that the ancient Romans salivated over death and dismemberment in the Roman colisseum.

People are understandably outraged at the antics pulled by a radio disc jockey who began taking bets on when Britney Spears would commit suicide. That is, by far, the most outrageous story I've heard out of this whole sordid affair. However, it's merely a logical extension of how far America has gone.

We are a celebrity-obssessed, superficial, and shallow culture. And it's time we took notice of that - and did something about it. If nothing else, why not pay attention to those Hollywood celebrities that can legitimately be considered role models?

Grow up, America! And get a life! If you want to pay attention to Britney Spears' sad situation, then pray for her. Don't celebrate or enjoy her demise.
