Is Bigotry Forgivable?

Has our society perhaps gotten things out of balance with respect to racism and bigotry?


Mel Gibson is all over the news, now as much for his latest movie as for his July anti-semitic tirade. Some have forgiven Gibson. Some don't care. (The fact that Gibson's Apocalypto has done respectably well at the box office would indicate that most filmgoers thus far are in one or the first two camps).

There are many, however, who are determined NOT to forgive Mel Gibson. Most of the furor over Gibson, of course, is not that he was arrested for drunk driving. The fact that he was driving while under the influence, and may have caused an accident had he not been arrested, is not really the focus for most people. Rather, it's that he flew off into an anti-semitic rage.
