Ted Haggard, president of the National Association of Evangelicals and the pastor of a 14,000-member congregation in Colorado, has resigned both positions in light of a growing scandal surrounding accusations of infidelity, homosexuality, and prostitution.
While we do not know the facts, and I have always been of the belief that a person should be presumed innocent until proven guilty, the Bible makes clear that pastors are to be held to a high moral standard. The nature of this accusation and Haggard's reaction seems to indicate that there's some substance to the charge that he paid for the sexual services of a male escort. If so, Haggard is right to step down.
