Happy Easter - and I hope you celebrate what it's really all about!
One of my pet peeves with our nation's holidays is that we've long since lost their meaning. Thanks to materialist consumerism AND left-wing political correctness, the United States has increasingly moved away from celebrating and honoring the traditional meanings of our holidays. We see this especially with the Fourth of July (it's about the Fireworks), Memorial Day (car sales and cookouts), Columbus Day (can't celebrate the European discovery and exploitation of America now, can we?), and of course Christmas (er....the "Holiday" whose name we dare not say) and Easter (a big rabbit and a bunch of colored eggs).
Well...sorry to offend sensibilities, but Easter is about the resurrection of Jesus of Nazareth from the dead. That's right. It's about Jesus, the Son of God, rising from the dead to atone for the sins of the world. And no Christian should feel like he or she has to deemphasize his or her faith so as not to offend someone else. We shouldn't have to keep the real meaning of Easter "private" so those in public society won't be made to feel uncomfortable.
This is not to say that Easter egg hunts are wrong or that having your kids pictured with a giant, white rabbit is a bad thing. Not at all. I love egg hunts, and my family has always enjoyed these harmless, fun, secular symbols of Easter. But we've also never allowed ourselves to forget what Easter is really all about. It's not about having a good time. It's about remembering what God did for us. I hope you'll take the time to do that this Easter Sunday.
