A new survey from the Culture and Media Institute confirms the primary battleground of today's culture debates: "attitudes toward God and religion." How people see God and religion will directly influence how they understand morality and right from wrong.
A total of 2,000 US citizens were surveyed in December 2006. Close to 95% were categorized as either "Orthodox," "Progressive," or "Independent" based on their answers. The rest, which reflect a number close to the typical margin of error for any poll, did not fit in any category. The poll represents a cross-section of the US population that can be fairly extrapolated to imply similar breakdowns throughout American society.
Astonishingly, 87% of respondents expressed a belief in God, but only 36% cited God's principles as the guiding authority for their lives. In other words, God is real, but who cares what God has to say? Interesting.
That 36% represent the "Orthodox" faithful (of which yours truly is proudly a part). These folks understand that God is the Creator and the Supreme Lawgiver. As such, what He says is True and Absolute. And it is binding on all people. Perhaps not in this life as much, since He extends free will. But it will be binding in the next, whether they like it or not.
The survey shows that a majority of Americans have bought the post-modern delusion that truth is relative and internal. And that values are subjective. It is no surprise then that our society is experiencing a moral decline. Sadly, given the self-absorbed and selfish nature of people, it's unlikely that this decline will stop anytime soon.
