Apparently, some Christians are not happy that Focus on the Family, an evangelical family ministry based in Colorado, has sponsored a fundraiser to benefit AIDS/HIV awareness and research.
Focus on the Family, founded and directed by Dr. James Dobson, is staunchly opposed to same-sex marriages and civil unions. Its entire ministry is dedicated to supporting and helping traditional male-female marriages in today's world. As such, it is no stranger to controversy. But usually, that controversy comes from the Left.
Not this time.
The Southern Colorado AIDS Project (S-CAP) held its Pikes Peak Classic bike fundraiser last month, and one of its sponsoring participants was Dobson's Focus on the Family. Why the controversy?
S-CAP doesn't just provide relief efforts (such as food, clothing, medical assistance, and counseling) to those affected by HIV/AIDS. If that were the extent of their efforts, there would be little to protest. Why shouldn't a Christian group support such humanitarianism?
The reason for the controversy: S-CAP recommends condom usage as a means of safe sex and distributes condoms accordingly. Focus on the Family, by contrast, has long championed traditional marriage and counseled those within its circle of influence against sex outside of marriage.
In other words, S-CAP supports condoms for safe sex. Focus on the Family supports abstinence outside of marriage.
Many Christians are asking, "Where do you draw the line?"
It's fine to support relief efforts for those who suffering from HIV/AIDS. In fact, in my opinion, it's inexcusable for Christians to oppose such efforts. However, should you financially support condom distribution as part of that?
Tough questions for Focus on the Family. What do YOU think?
