Friedrich Nietzsche once declared: "You have your way. I have my way. As for the right way, the correct way, and the only way, it does not exist.” A Christian or even a theist, of course, will have a quick retort for Mr. Nietzsche, pointing out that God determines the "right way."
Not so, according to Nietzsche. You see, God is dead. So.............next?
Without a God-imposed morality, humanity is left to fend for itself when it comes to morality. And the tragic implications of Charles Darwin's "Survival of the Fittest" becomes most apparent, since the community with the most power tends to impose its "morality" on the rest. Adolf Hitler, after all, had a moral code - and at least six million Jews died as a result of it.
Atheists will counter that we don't need God to set a working, objective, moral standard. Not so, responds Nietzsche. “The world itself is the will to power - and nothing else!" declared the philosopher. "And you yourself are the will to power - and nothing else!”
Morality comes down to will, not God. That is, if there is no God.
Thankfully, we can take encouragement from the fact that Friedrich Nietzsche operated from a flawed premise. God is not dead. He is very much alive and very much real.
