To our knowledge, Abraham Lincoln was never baptized. He never formally joined a church, and was known (at least in his early political years) to respond with wit and sarcasm to questions about his religious convictions. Nevertheless, as President, Lincoln gave some of the most moving and profound sermons. Yes....sermons.
Anyone, for example, who has read Lincoln's Second Inaugural can't help but marvel that a President of the United States would use the occasion of his inauguration to preach a sermon. Yet he did.
What was Mr. Lincoln's faith? Was a Deist or skeptic? Or was he an evangelical Christian? Or somewhere in between?
