Using the Bible to Lose Weight

Discover Healthy Eating Habits to Shed Those Pounds

Jul 14, 2008 Denise Oliveri

The Bible actually has a lot to say about foods and how to eat them. When you figure out exactly what the Bible has to say about your diet, you can lose weight.

It is as simple as studying the Bible and staying atuned to the ways that people ate in Bible times. Many Christians are now looking to God for weight loss, not only for inspiration and support, but to also learn how foods were supposed to nurture the mind and body.

What the Bible Says about Foods

Even as early as the very first chapter in the Bible, we learn that God created the plants and animals for food. However, we also learn that some foods were not meant to be eaten (such as the "apple" that tempted Eve). Genesis 1:29 says that every tree yields a fruit, meant to be the meat of life. Ezekiel 4:9 points out that wheat, barley, beans, lentils, and millet are to be used for bread making. There are also many passages that discourage eating meat (or certain types of meat) and discourage overindulgence at the table.

There is a reason why people during this time did not suffer from obesity and obesity-related illnesses such as diabetes. They ate healthy, and they were constantly moving about with chores gaining the necessary exercise that complements a healthy lifestyle.

Applying Biblical Eating Habits to Your Own Life

You can take lessons learned from the Bible and apply them to your own life in terms of the foods you eat. In fact, there are many churches that support Bible-based weight loss programs and hold meetings and workshops to help members support each other in their diet journey. There are also many books and products on the market that use the Bible as a means for losing weight. One product, known as the "Bible Bar", is a nutritional bar that combines foods eaten during Biblical times such as raw honey, pomegranates, olive oil, figs, whole grain wheat, and barley. Like foods long ago, it contains no artificial ingredients, preservatives, or sugar.

So, how can you manage your weight and have a healthier lifestyle using the Bible? One of the first things you can do is to learn what the Bible says about food and eating. When you understand that eating too much is much like greed, then you can apply those principles to your life. Learn how organic and natural foods can help your body.

You can also see that people long ago ate simple foods and only ate when they needed to. Recognizing the difference between physical hunger and emotional hunger may also help you. Long ago, people ate food to sustain life and not just because they were bored or had nothing better to do. While eating was important back then, it was not people's main focus and all they thought about, as many of us do today.

Losing weight is never easy, but when you turn to the Bible you can apply the principles to your own diet. Not only will you shed pounds, but you will feel energized and free from the toxins that invade your body with all of the manufactured foods found on grocery shelves. What have you got to lose, except unwanted weight.
