Understanding That Only One God Exists

How Creation Demonstrates the Lord’s Supremacy

Christians know there to be only one true God, but they also must affirm this in letting the Holy Spirit reign from within.

All Bible quotes are of the NASB translation.

The existence of only one God—the Father, Son and Holy Spirit—is central to the Christian faith. Such a revelation cannot stand on logic alone, but reason—combined with one’s belief—can reinforce one of the Bible’s most basic teachings.

One God Created the Universe

Millions of people have read the first chapter of Genesis and learned a fundamental Christian teaching: God established the world and everything outside it. Just as prominent in modern times is the “Big Bang” concept, which hypothesizes that the universe emerged from a single point. What few know, though, is that a Catholic priest—Georges Lemaitre—is the physicist credited with the scientific theory.

Both science and the Bible can agree that one act of creation established the universe as we know it today. Christians, then, find logical support in their belief that one Creator—and His one act of creation—was necessary for the life and matter on Earth.

Only by the Lord’s initiating the Big Bang did humans get the power to create things of their own, from sculptures to skyscrapers. Thus, all material things can be attributed to the same Source: God, whose creative act single-handedly established the universe.

God Alone Rules from the Outside

Once one realizes that God alone is the Creator of all things, they come to see that the Lord has infinite domain. Every particle in the universe, every teaspoon of matter is under His control and authority—as He brought it into existence. This idea applies Job’s realization—“The LORD gave and the LORD has taken away” (Job 1:20)—to infinite proportions.

Christians, then, should take comfort in that God is truly almighty. No power is greater than His own; nothing has domain where He has none. Everything is under His control, given that He created all of it. Though humans and Satan alike might claim authority, God still rules over them both—regardless of the free will He might have given either.

Given that no person, object or entity has power or authority superior than God’s (because the Lord, in creating things, affirmed His control over all things), no other “god” can exist—given that the Father, Son and Holy Spirit would still have power over and ownership of it. The Bible affirms this, showing how the devil—who challenged God’s authority—was thrown down to the Earth as an inferior being (Revelation 12:7-10)

Only God Reigns Within

One of the wonderful paradoxes about the Lord is that He not only reigns from the outside—as shown above—but from within, in the form of the Holy Spirit (provided one accepts Christ’s Sacrifice and welcomes the Holy Ghost into their lives). Those whom it leads and guides can affirm that one God reigns within them.

It is possible for people to have multiple “gods” in their lives—whether money or another object of worship. When such people let the Holy Spirit reign in full, these sources of idolatry die out as one makes the Holy Spirit (and God) the focus of their worship and attention

The existence of only one God is seen in His act of creation, which gives Him external authority and domain over all things. Equally important, though, is that God rules from within in the form of the Holy Spirit. When a Christian lets the Holy Ghost lead them, they affirm that no other “god”—in the literal or metaphorical sense—exists in their lives. God’s Spirit, after all, is the only thing with control, domain and authority over them.
