Simple prayers invite God to guide and support someone trying to diet and eat healthily to lose weight.

People try to lose weight for many reasons, including health problems and a desire to be healthier. The following prayers — grace before a healthy meal, blessing a diet, prayer to keep a diet, and thanksgiving over lost weight — ask God to be a part of the weight loss journey.

Grace Before a Healthy Meal

Transitioning to a healthy diet to lose weight can be difficult, especially if one has to develop a taste for low-fat, low-salt entrees. The following prayer asks God to bless the new, healthy food and grant strength on the journey of healthy eating:

“God, thank you for my healthy meal [insert specific items, if desired.] Let this food nourish my body, that I feel full and satisfied. Keep me from eating anything unhealthy before my next snack, and help me focus on my goal- a healthy body, mind, and spirit. In Your name, Amen.”

One might also pray this prayer with children if changing the whole family’s eating habits to transition them into the new diet and connect healthy eating with God in their minds.

Prayer for Blessing a Diet

Many fad diets that exist are unhealthy. Planning a healthy diet that does not harm the self honors the body that God created. The following prayer asks God to bless a new diet and any weight loss that may come, that the body may be as healthy and happy as possible:

“Loving God, please help me to be healthy in body, mind, and spirit. Let my body be Your temple, be nourished by [insert specific weight loss plan.] Please bless me as I begin this diet, that I might better care for myself and fuel my body, to the honor of Your name. Amen.”

One might say this prayer before beginning a weight loss program or one could offer this prayer with a friend who is going to be a diet buddy.

Prayer for Keeping a Diet to Eat Healthy

Wanting to lose weight is much easier than actually losing weight. The following prayer is designed to be said when one is tempted to spoil a diet, that God might refocus the dieter on the diet plan:

“God, I’m tempted by this [insert desired, unhealthy item.] Please help me resist and focus on something else. I can live without this [unhealthy item.] Amen.”

One might repeat this prayer while tempted until the craving passes or make the self get up and walk away from the food item while saying the prayer.

Thanksgiving for Lost Weight

Losing weight in a healthy manner takes hard work, support, and discipline. The following prayer offers God thanks for losing weight and asks that God continue to bless a healthy lifestyle:

“Loving God, thank you for the strength to stick to [insert diet plan] and for [insert weight lost or other milestone.] Thank you for being with me throughout my attempts to be healthy. Be with me and guide me as I continue to choose life, think before I eat, and be healthy. Amen.”

One may offer this prayer with a friend or support group to celebrate weight lost in a healthy manner or any time one needs to stop and reflect positively about the healthy lifestyle experience.

Losing weight can be a struggle, and with prayer, religious individuals will not journey alone as he/she strives to change eating habits.
