Prayers for WinterPrayer for Road Safety, Blessing the Holiday Shopping, and More
Welcome winter with a selection of simple prayers to stay safe on icy roads, recover from winter illness, give thanks for winter's beauty, and finish holiday shopping.
Winter is a season of bad weather, holiday preparation, and trying to stay warm. The following prayers — prayer for road safety, thanksgiving for winter, prayer for recovery from an illness, and blessing for holiday shopping — provide a way for Christians to invite God into life during the winter season. Prayer for Road SafetyDriving in winter weather is a source of danger and stress. The following prayer invites God to guide, strengthen, and protect an individual driving on icy roads or in snowy conditions: "God of safety, keep me and my loved ones safe on icy roads. Help me pay attention and drive cautiously. Grant me energy and patience if the drive takes longer than usual. Keep me warm and safe from harm. Be with me, be with me, be with me, in Your loving and precious name. Amen." One might pray this prayer for another driving in bad conditions. If creeping along on icy roads, a religious driver might repeat the phrase, "Keep me warm and safe from harm. Be with me. Be with me. Be with me, in Your name" to combat stress and provide comfort. Thanksgiving for WinterDespite cold weather and dangerous road, winter has much beauty to enjoy. The snow, the evergreen trees, and the chill in the air are signs of the coming holidays, a source of joy for many. The following Christian prayer offers God thanks for winter's natural beauty and invites all to enjoy the beauty of God's creation this winter: "God of creation, thank you for the beauty of winter- for snow, icy window panes, evergreen trees, warm coats, sledding, and hot cocoa. [Insert as many thanksgivings as desired. If praying this prayer with children, invite each to offer his/her individual thanksgivings.] Let us enjoy Your creation in all its glory, this winter and always. Amen." One might offer this thanksgiving after an outdoor outing or with children at any time to increase appreciation for nature and God's creation. This prayer might also be offered after the first snow or other winter weather that turns the world white or on a day off when one does not have to go out in the winter weather. Prayer for Recovering from a Winter IllnessWinter's a time that many people suffer from colds, the flu, and other health problems. The following prayer offers strength and comfort to those struggling with winter illnesses: “God of power and might, be with [insert person’s name] as he/she recovers from a winter illness. Warm him/her in the light of Your love, that he/she might find the time, rest, and treatment to feel better soon. Remind [insert person’s name] that he/she is Your beloved child and that You are with him/her during this illness, and always. Amen.” One may offer this prayer for a loved one or family member who is ill this winter. This prayer may also be transformed into a prayer for the self by changing the pronouns. If suffering from a particular symptom of an illness, repeating the phrase, “You are with me during this illness and always” may bring comfort. Blessing for Holiday ShoppingFinding the right gift for everyone on the holiday list can be stressful. The following prayer asks God to grant patience and kindness as one muddles through the holiday shopping: “Loving God, please be with me as I search for the perfect way to communicate my love to [insert person or persons who will receive gifts yet to be found]. Remind me that Your love and my own love for [insert person’s name] are much more important than any material object. Let me not forget the reason for the season, Your Son Jesus, as I prepare for Christmas. Be with me, and help me to find gifts for everyone and to share them with love, as You lovingly shared Jesus with the world. Amen.” One might offer this prayer if frustrated about finding the right gift or at any time the holiday preparations become a source of stress. Winter can be a busy time, preparing for the holidays, and a time for careful driving and stopping to enjoy the snow. With prayer, the Christian can invite God into all winter activities as he/she transitions into the holiday season.
