Prayer After Losing a Job
Losing a job can feel like the end of the world. Not only must one find a new job, but there is the worry about the bills, the home, and feeding the family. The following prayer asks God to protect the unemployed and offer hope for the future.
"God of power, I don't know why You didn't save my job. Help me now that I've lost the means to support [insert names of those income supports.] Lead me away from blaming myself, fearing for the future, and despair over the current situation. Grant me faith to trust in Your goodness, no matter what lies ahead. Please bless and keep me and my family. Amen."
This prayer may be shared by concerned family and friends after a loved one has lost a job, as well.
Prayer for Family of Unemployed
Unemployment affects everyone who loves and cares for the jobless person, as well as that person’s spouse and dependents. The following prayer asks God to comfort and protect the family whose provider has lost a job.
“God, You give and take away for reasons no one understands. Please be with [insert family’s name] as they struggle with the loss of [insert name of parent or provider who’s become unemployed]’s income. Free them from anxiety, comfort them in Your love, and bring people into their lives that can help them to meet their needs. In Your loving and precious name, Amen.”
One concerned about an unemployed family, or recently unemployed themselves, might pray this or other prayers daily for strength.
Prayer to Ask for Help
No one likes to ask for help, but when one is unemployed, loved ones can offer necessary support such as loans, shelter, food, and other sources of income. Government assistance is another option that is hard for some to accept. The following prayer asks for strength and humility to reach out and meet financial needs if a new job is too long in coming.
"God, I can't believe I've lost [insert losses] and now I have to ask for help from [insert source of support.] Heal my pride wounded by recent hard times, and let me reach out in faith that You will provide. Help me believe in myself and Your ability to grant me a job in the future. Inspire me to keep reaching out, no matter how hard it is, that I may receive all blessings from You, including help from others, in Your loving and precious name. Amen."
This prayer may be repeated every time one seeks a job or assistance from others as a reminder that God is with the unemployed during this difficult time.
Blessing for the Unemployed
Losing a job can be devastating to one's sense of worth. The following blessing reminds the person who has just lost his or her job that he or she is still beloved and precious in God's eyes.
"Loving God, though I am jobless, I am not unloved. I am Your beloved child, with whom You are well pleased. Please bless and keep me and my family during this difficult time, that I may never forget whose I am. Amen."
