Prayers for NovemberHonoring Veterans Day, Grace before Thanksgiving Dinner, and More
Simple prayers offer ways to welcome November on Veteran's Day, at the Thanksgiving dinner table, or while enjoying early winter weather.
November is a busy month transitioning into the holiday season. The following prayers — prayer to honor Veteran's Day, thanksgiving for November weather, blessing a November birthday, and grace before Thanksgiving dinner — serve as a way for a Christian to invite God to be present throughout November and its many activities. Prayer to Honor Veteran's DayVeterans Day — November 11 in the United States — is a date to honor the men and women who have served in the Armed Forces. The following prayer enables Christians to thank God for veterans and their service to their country: "God of power and might, thank you for the veterans and their families who have sacrificed and served for our nation's security. Bless veterans, soldiers, and all who protect and guard others, that they may find strength and security in You. Amen." One might offer this prayer in honor of a specific veteran as part of a Veteran's Day celebration or include it in one's daily or family devotion on that day. Thanksgiving for November WeatherNovember weather often transitions from autumn to winter in the Northern Hemisphere. In this time of waiting, there is much beauty in the nature. With the following prayer, Christians can thank God for the beauty of November weather and other gifts this month might bring: "God of change, as the leaves brown and the frost hardens the ground, be with us and all creation as we wait for spring. Let us not miss the beauty of November- the bare trees, the light snow, a crackling bonfire, and the feast at Thanksgiving [one may insert other thanksgivings, if desired]. May the light of Your love warm us all, this November, and always. Amen." One might offer this prayer after a nature walk or other outdoor activity or to enhance a specific November activity such as a bon fire or Thanksgiving dinner. This prayer could also be prayed for encouragement during a particularly grey and cold November day when one yearns for warmer weather. Repeating the phrase, "May the light of Your love warm us all, this November, and always" may be of particular comfort. Blessing a November BirthdayA November birthday offers an opportunity to celebrate before the holiday season even begins. The following prayer asks God to bless and rejoice in a November birthday with the birthday individual and all who love him/her: "God of warmth and light, as the world turns cold, warm [insert birthday person's name] as he/she celebrates his/her birthday this November. May he/she have a blessed and beautiful day, this day and always. Amen." One might offer this prayer during a November birthday party, in a birthday card, or at another time as deemed appropriate. This prayer may also be shared with a cake of glowing candles to symbolize God's warmth as described in the prayer. Grace before Thanksgiving DinnerThanksgiving dinner is a time for family, friends, and it's a time when Christians recognize their many gifts from God. The following grace provides a short blessing before the long awaited meal: "God, thank you for this meal and for being together. [Insert specific people who contributed to this meal and their contributions, if desired.] May the light of Your love keep us together, today and always, Amen." One may expand upon this prayer by inviting the dinner party to share one thing they are thankful for since the last thanksgiving. November is a month to prepare for winter and the busy holiday season. With prayer, November can also be a time to connect and reflect on what is important in life.
