Prayers for Godparents and Godchildren

Prayer for a New Godparent, Thanksgiving for a Godchild, and More

Oct 18, 2009 Melissa Roberts

Simple prayers offer Christian godparents strength and comfort as they guide, enjoy, and mentor their godchildren with God's help.

Godparents are Christian adults chosen by a child's parents to help raise a child in the faith and to offer additional support to the child. The following prayers for godparents — prayer for a new godparent, prayer for a godchild's protection, prayer for a godparent before a difficult conversation, thanksgiving for a godchild, and blessing a godparent and godchild's relationship — invite God to be an integral part of any godparent and godchild's relationship.

Prayer for a New Godparent

Becoming a godparent for the first time is considered a great honor for many Christians. It can also create anxiety about the responsibility to help teach and nurture a child in a religious sense. The following prayer offers strength and comfort for a new godparent as he/she begins a faith journey with a child:

"Loving God, thank you for the gift of [insert godchild's name] and for [insert godparent's name] who has chosen to guide and care for him/her. Bless these two as they grow together in Your love. Guide [insert godparent's name] to teach, mentor, comfort, and strengthen [insert godchild's name] to grow up healthy, kind, and to the fullest potential. May the light of Your love shine in their relationship, now and forever. Amen."

The new godparent may share this prayer for himself/herself. The parents and other family and friends of the child might also pray this prayer with the new godparent to show support and honor the relationship between God, the godparent, and the godchild.

Prayer for a Godchild's Protection

Part of being a godparent involves caring for the godchild. When a godchild is ill, in trouble at school, struggling with a new brother or sister, or just going through a bad patch, the following prayer invites God to be with the child during this difficult time:

"God of power and might, please keep [insert godchild's name] safe during this difficult time [one may share specifics of situation and/or concerns with God if desired]. As Your Son Jesus invited all the children to come to him, may He also embrace [insert godchild's name] and keep him/her secure from want, fear, and illness, now and forever. Amen."

A religious godparent may offer this prayer for a godchild during a difficult time. One might also include the names of the child's parents, teachers, and others involved in helping and guiding the child in the prayer for additional support.

Prayer for a Godparent Before a Difficult Conversation

Sometimes, a godparent may support a child and his/her parents by trying to talk to a child about a difficult subject such as bullying at school, a learning disorder, struggles with peer pressure and body image.

The following prayer asks God to guide and support the godparent before he/she brings up a difficult subject with a child:

"Loving God, please guide me as I talk with my godchild about [insert difficult situation and details, if desired]. Help me to be patient, kind, and firm, that I may speak the truth in love, spark awareness in [insert godchild's name], and guide him/her in the light of Your love. Amen."

One might offer this prayer any time one is anxious about a difficult conversation with a godchild. After the conversation, the godparent may choose to thank God for details of the exchange that went well and for any awareness that the child gained during the conversation.

Prayer of Thanksgiving for a Godchild

Caring for a child and spending time with him or her can truly be a blessing. The following prayer invites the godparent to reflect on cherished memories and moments with a godchild and to thank God for all time spend in the godchild's company:

"God of power and great glory, thank you for [insert godchild's name]. In so many ways, he/she is Your beloved child, in whom You are well pleased. [One may insert special characteristics, accomplishments, or memories of godchild that are a source of joy, if desired]. Please bless [insert godchild's name] and me as we journey together in Your love. Amen."

A religious godparent might choose to offer this prayer aloud with a godchild and encourage the godchild to also share pleasant memories and favorite attributes of the godparent. Parents may also be invited to observe and give thanks for the godparent and godchild's relationship.

Blessing a Godparent and a Godchild's Relationship

Any time two people are in a relationship, there are ups and downs. The following blessing encourages the religious godparent and godchild to see a divine presence in their relationship and trust in the divine presence:

"God, we are all fearfully and wonderfully made in relationship with You and each other. Bless [insert godchild and godparent's name], guide them, and keep them together in love. Remind them often of the gifts in each other and in You. Creator God, create new life and joy here, now and always. Amen."

The child family 's might offer this prayer around the anniversary of when the godparent and godchild's relationship began to as a special extension of grace at a family dinner to honor the godparent and godchild's relationship.
