Simple prayers invite God on the first date and into the dating process.

Dating can be a trying time, especially for a Christian seeking the right person. The following prayers invite God to be a part of the dating experience, from the first date through deciding on a second date and beyond.

Prayer before a First Date

A first date is a new experience, a new opportunity to meet someone and see where the relationship might or might not go. The following prayer offers the anxiety of a first date to God and asks God’s guidance throughout the first date: “God, I’m about to meet a new person and see if he/she is right for me. Please be present with me on this date. Help me to be true to You and who You have created me to be. Bless our time together, and let us glorify Your name, now and always. Amen.”

One could say this prayer any time anxiety about a first date surfaces, or right before meeting the date for the first time.

Prayer After a First Date

When a first date ends, the thinking begins. Is the person right? Will there be a second date? Sometimes, this decision is obvious. If not, the following prayer asks for God’s guidance: “Loving God, thank you for my time with [insert date’s name here.] Guide me on how to proceed, and keep me on Your path, now and always. Amen.”

Prayer Before Dating Again

Jumping into dating again can be difficult. There is worry about how one will do, fear that one will never find another person, or just the general insecurity around reaching out for love.

The following prayer offers all the concerns about dating again to God and asks God to calm all fears and guide one in the right direction: “God, I feel I’m ready for a relationship now because [list reasons to God.] Be with me as I prepare to open myself to others again. [Pause for a while and share fears or concerns about dating, if any.] Let me reach out in the right direction, that I might go where You are pointing and find the right person You have created for me. Amen.”

A concerned friend or family member might also pray this prayer for a loved one who is dating again by changing the pronouns in the prayer.

Prayer to Find a Date

Nothing is worse than wanting to be in a relationship and not being in a relationship.

The following prayer asks God’s presence and guidance in this time of waiting, that the right person may come and the person praying may have the wisdom to recognize him or her: “God of power and might, grant me patience as we search for a date together. Help me to reach out and ask people I know and trust, that they might know someone who’s looking for me. Let me be open to who You have selected for me, rather than who I think is best for me. Open my heart to share love again, in the power of Your name. Amen.”

Thanksgiving for a Date

Nothing is more exciting than a good date. One feels connected, hopeful, and a sense of joy in meeting someone who works.

The following prayer thanks God for God’s role in meeting the date as well as offers opportunities to share all of the joys with God: “Glory to you, God, and thanks be to Your name! Thank you for the gift of meeting [insert date’s name here] and for [insert special conversation, activity, feeling that is a source of joy.] [One might also spend a few minutes reflecting on why the date went well, and offer those thanksgivings to God, too.] You are good, O Lord, and You have shared Your goodness with me. Please continue to bless and guide me, to the glory of Your name. Amen.”

The Thanksgiving for a Date prayer may be used for devotion, too. Journaling on the reflection exercises included in the prayer over a period of time can extend the prayer into an exercise for personal exploration.

Dating is never easy, but with God’s help and guidance, the source of worry and stress is placed in the hands of one who can handle it.
