Prayer after Chemotherapy, Thanksgiving for Remission, and More
Living with cancer is a struggle for many. The following prayers- blessing a cancer patient, prayer before a biopsy, prayer after chemotherapy, and thanksgiving for cancer in remission- offer the Christian and his or her family hope and strength through the battle with cancer.
Blessing a Cancer Patient
Learning one has cancer is a life-changing event. The following blessing asks God to strengthen and comfort the cancer patient, that he/she might not feel alone and abandoned in this time of difficulty:
“God of power and mystery, we don’t know why [insert person's name] has cancer, and others don’t. Please be with him/her throughout the upcoming battle. Bless and keep [insert person's name] in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Grant him/her strength and courage to trust in Your healing power, and remind him/her that he/she is never alone in You. Amen.”
The person newly diagnosed with cancer may desire to pray this for himself/herself, or family or friends may offer the prayer on another’s behalf.
Prayer before a Biopsy
Waiting for the results of a biopsy can be agony. Everyone hopes the biopsy is benign, yet not knowing adds to the anxiety of the situation. The following prayer invites God into the anxiety of waiting for biopsy results and asks God to calm and strengthen those who are waiting:
“Loving God, be with [insert patient’s name] as he/she waits for the results of this latest biopsy. Guide the doctors taking the specimen and analyzing it, and help them to treat [insert patient’s name] efficiently, effectively, and compassionately if necessary. Be with [insert patient’s name] as he/she learns the biopsy results, and guide him/her and his/her family forward in the light of Your love, now and always. Amen.”
The family and patient might share this prayer in a waiting room or at a hospital bed as they wait for the biopsy results, or others might share the prayer for one they care about who is having a biopsy that day.
Prayer after Chemotherapy
Chemotherapy affects different people in different ways, but it is almost always an invasive and exhausting experience. The following prayer offers the person with cancer comfort in the face of chemotherapy symptoms and reminds him/her that he/she is not alone with God:
“God of power, who suffered on the cross, please be with [insert person's name] as he/she suffers from chemotherapy, especially [insert specific side effects of chemotherapy, if desired]. Hold [insert person's name]’s hand, comfort him/her in Your embrace, and remind [insert patient’s name] that he/she is greater than any cancer in You. Amen.”
A patient might pray this prayer for comfort in the face of chemotherapy symptoms, or others might offer the prayer on the patient’s behalf.
Repeating the phrase “I am greater than cancer in You,” might offer particular comfort and distract the mind from intense nausea, pain, or other uncomfortable chemotherapy symptoms.
Thanksgiving for Cancer in Remission
After the struggle of surgery, chemotherapy, and other cancer treatment, nothing brings a patient and his/her supporters more joy than learning the cancer is in remission. The following thanksgiving invites God to rejoice in a cancer remission, too:
“God of power and might, we rejoice that [insert person’s name]’ s cancer is in remission. Thank you for the technology, compassion, and skill that have healed [insert person’s name], to Your great glory. Let the light of Your love continue to shine in [insert person’s name]’s life, and in the lives of those who love and care for him/her, to the glory of Your name.”
This prayer might be offered as part of a celebration to honor cancer in remission, or immediately after hearing the news to include God in the process.
Cancer is a long, hard road for those diagnosed and their loved ones. Prayer offers support and comfort to those who seek God in the midst of their battles with cancer and other areas of life, too.
