Prayers for a Broken Heart

Prayer for Healing a Break-Up and More

Sep 9, 2009 Melissa Roberts

Simple prayers offer the pain of a broken heart to God and ask God to grant healing after a break-up.

Breaking up is painful and messy, but Christians do not have to go through this process alone. This article includes simple prayers to heal a broken heart and the baggage of breaking-up.

Prayer for Healing a Break-Up

Healing a break-up takes time, patience, and lots of self-care. The following prayer asks God to guard and strengthen the broken-hearted.

This prayer is appropriate right after a break-up, to ask God's protection and guidance, or any time someone who's lost a significant other needs extra support.

"Loving God, You know the power of love and how awesome a gift it is. Because I love [insert ex's name here] and I have lost him/her, I hurt. Please be with me as I grieve the loss of [insert ex's name] in my life. Comfort me when places, peoples, food, and activities remind me of him/her. Strengthen me when I'm having a bad day, and let me know You love me when I feel alone and lost. Walk with me, day by day, and remind me that I'm never alone in You. Amen."

A concerned friend or family member can also share this prayer on behalf of someone with a broken heart by changing pronouns in the text of the prayer.

Prayer to Combat Obsessive Thoughts About an Ex

After a break-up, it's easy to obsess about what went wrong, blame the self, or engage in any manner of negative thoughts.

The following bullet prayer — a short, sharp prayer to combat obsessive thoughts — can be said anytime one is plagued with negative thinking to promote love and trust in God.

"God loves me. I trust God's love. God's love brings new life. Amen."

Repeating the words "God" and "love" refocuses the obsessive thoughts into thoughts of God, which calm and heal rather than the worry that can destroy one's peace of mind.

Prayer for Anger Towards an Ex-Boyfriend or Ex-Girlfriend

It's normal to be angry about losing a significant other through betrayal, cheating, or just growing apart over time. The following prayer offers that anger to God in a safe place without harming self, the ex, or others who may be involved.

This prayer may be said at a time when an individual is able to spend some time reflecting on exactly what one is angry about. This process may be painful and draining, so gentleness and patience are highly recommended.

The prayer for anger goes as follows: "God, as Your beloved Son threw down tables in the temple to express His rage, now let me express my own anger over breaking up with [insert ex's name here.] I am angry because [pause to reflect why one is angry and share with God.] Please heal my anger. Comfort me while I'm hurting, and guide me into a future where You continue to prosper and guard me. In Your loving and precious name, Amen."

This prayer exercise can be used with other emotions related to a break-up- grief, shame, or an obsessive desire to get back with a person even though the relationship is wrong.

Thanksgiving for a Past Relationship

Sometimes, insights into a break-up occur immediately, but often it takes time and reflection to learn from a break-up. The following prayer offers God thanks for healing after a break-up once it has occurred.

"Loving God, [insert ex's name] and I did not last forever, though my love for him/her, a gift from You, will. Thank you for bringing [insert ex's name] into my life and for all the good times we had together. [Pause and reflect on specific memories and offer those to God.] I offer these memories to You in honor of our time together and in hope that You might grant me more memories of another love in the future. Please guide me to experience love again. Amen."

Many people try to force closure prematurely to avoid the pain of losing someone they love. It is recommended to thank God only when one truly feels gratitude for a lost relationship. Otherwise, residual anger at God may surface later that impedes the healing process after a break-up.

Breaking-up is never easy. With prayer, however, God mends broken hearts with love, healing, and time.
