Prayers for a New MotherPrayer for Postpartum Depression, Blessing the New Family, and More
Simple prayers ask God to bless and heal a new mom as she and her family transition into life after a baby is born.
Having a baby takes some adjustment for everyone, but especially the new mother. The following prayers — prayers to recover from pregnancy, prayer for postpartum depression, blessing for a new family, and prayer for a new baby’s sister or brother — invite God to comfort and strengthen a new mother, her baby, and her family. Prayer to Recover from PregnancyAfter giving birth, a new mom’s body, mind, and spirit may take a while to recover. In addition, the new baby’s needs come first, meaning that new mothers may struggle to heal due to their other demands. The following prayer asks God to grant strength, healing, and help to the new mother as she recovers from giving birth: “God of power and might, grant [insert new mom’s name] enough energy to balance family, spouse, her new baby and other obligations as she heals from her pregnancy. Grant her sleep, support, patience, and love, that she may recover fully. Comfort her in her mood swings, strengthen her tired body, and rejoice with her in the new life she has just delivered. In Your loving and precious name, Amen.” A new mother might share this prayer on her own behalf, or a concerned friend or family member might pray it for her to let her know she is not alone as she struggles to recover from her pregnancy. Prayer for Postpartum DepressionPostpartum depression is challenging reality for many new mothers. Instead of rejoicing in their babies, as is socially acceptable, their bodies and minds struggle to find balance. In the midst of demands of new baby and family, these mothers suffer, too often in silence. The following prayer asks God to guide mothers who struggle with postpartum depression, that they might know they are not forsaken during this difficult time: “God who made light from darkness, please guide [insert new mom’s name] as she struggles with depression after giving birth. Hold her in Your loving arms, no matter how she feels, and grant her peace in trusting You even though she may not feel that she can trust herself. Guide and inspire those who love [insert new mom’s name] to care for her and for her baby, that she may see light through them, even if she cannot see it for herself. Let this time of darkness pass, oh Lord, that [insert new mom’s name] may enjoy her new baby and her family in the light of Your love. Amen.” Blessing for a New FamilyWhen a baby is born, a family changes and must adapt to the change. The following blessing asks God to protect a new family and guide them in relating lovingly to each other and to their new addition: “Loving God, thank you for bringing [insert new baby’s name] into this family. We rejoice that our family has grown. Please bless [insert names of all the family members] as we journey together, that we may have open hearts to care for each other, ourselves, and You. No matter what hurdles we face, deliver us into a deeper trust that You guide us always as [insert baby’s name] and all of us grow in You. Amen.” This prayer might be shared as a family aloud, so that other children understand the importance of the new baby in their family. Other concerned friends and families might also share this prayer on behalf of a new mother and her family going through the transition of a new baby. Prayer for a New Baby’s Sister or BrotherSiblings of a new baby often struggle as their parents focus on the new baby’s needs, giving them less attention than they would like. The following prayer asks God to care for the sibling of a new baby, that he/she might feel loved despite the changes in the family: “Lord, we celebrate [insert new baby’s name] but know that our family will never be the same. Please remind [insert names of siblings] that they are special and loved, even though [insert names of adult caretakers] are busy with the new baby. Comfort [insert siblings’ names] during this transition when they may feel neglected or ignored, and heal any anger, jealousy, or grief they may be experiencing because of the new baby. May [insert siblings’ names] know that they are your beloved children, with whom You are well pleased. Amen.” A new mother might share this prayer aloud with a new baby and his/her siblings to help the other children feel connected to the new baby and the mother’s love for them all. Being a new mother is rewarding but exhausting. With prayer, a new mother and her family can tap into a source of infinite strength, their faith in God, as they seek to care for their new baby and grow in love as a family.
