The apostle Paul defends his ministry and talks about his challenges that causes him sleepless nights, among others. He said, "I have labored and toiled and have often gone without sleep; I have known hunger and thirst and have often gone without food…" ~2Corinthians 11: 27

One of the children's favorite stories of bravery in the Bible is the prophet Daniel's who was thrown into the lions' den by the king of Babylon who challenged Daniel's trust in God. The story goes that he was not harmed by the beasts from God's protection. The king, guilty of what he has done was rendered restless and sleepless: "The king returned to his palace … and he could not sleep." ~Daniel 6: 16-23

"When I was in distress, I sought the Lord; at night I stretched out untiring hands and my soul refused to be comforted." ~Psalm 77: 2. While Satan tests Job of his faithfulness to God, the quotes talk of Job's anguish shown in his terrible sleeping disorder and a restless night. The psalmist calls upon God with complete faith and trust. Hope in God's words encourages those who believe in Him to continue in the prayer and supplications. The psalmist believes that God knows what he needs and what is good for him, and when he is in trouble God is nearby. He stays awake with a purpose, and prays to seek God's help.

"My eyes stay open through the watches of the night that I may meditate on your promises." ~Psalm 119: 148
