In the book Spiritual Disciplines for the Christian Life, Donald.S Whitney outlines a five-plan method of reading the bible.
Each day read an equal amount of chapters from:
Genesis (the Law)
Joshua (History)
Job (Poetry)
Isaiah (the Prophets)
Matthew (the New Testament)
There is a need to realize that this is an age that does not necessarily allow people to take time out. It is an age engulfed by advanced technology; ever-present in our workplace, in our homes, in our pockets, everywhere! If people are not emailing or surfing the net, they are watching television or using their fancy mobiles; laptops; DVD players; ipods: the list is endless!
Despite this fact, there are ways to use this technology wisely. Nowadays, it is possible to legally download bible messages or sermons onto your ipod or PC. Many websites have pod casts that can be listened to and more often than not, have notes that can be downloaded too! It’s as easy as that! While driving to work or perhaps having an early morning jog, people can now listen to twenty minutes of their favourite pastor preach or listen to scripture and memory verses from different books of the bible.
These are just a few of the many possibilities at hand that one could incorporate into their daily bible intake; vastly improving the amount and availability of God’s word in one’s daily life. In saying that, it is important to be responsible and take heed to what is being heard; therefore making sure that the websites and notes that are being read are in line with God’s word.
For those who do have time on their hands: there are so many fantastic Christian books out there that are inspiring and that portray passages and books of the bible in a fresh and meaningful way.
