A Snoodle's Tale - A Sunday School Lesson

Free Lesson Plan for a Preschool or Elementary Church Class

This lesson uses the Veggie Tales movie, A Snoodle's Tale, to teach children that they are special because God has given them unique gifts.

A Snoodle’s Tale is a production of Big Idea, the makers of Veggie Tales. In this 15 minute movie, Snoodle Doo learns to love himself for the person God sees in him. He learns that the gifts God places “in his backpack” make him special.

Materials

  • A Snoodle’s Tale coloring page
  • A Snoodle’s Tale movie
  • T.V. and DVD or VHS player
  • Prepared construction paper backpacks, including a teacher sample
  • Musical instruments
  • C.D. and player

Preparation

In advance, prepare and cut out copies of backpacks on construction paper. Cut around the top and side edges of the lower compartment for a peek-a-boo flap. Glue a small piece of white paper behind the flap.

Procedures

  1. Greetings and Color Sheet. While waiting for all of the children to arrive, provide a picture of Snoodle Doo for children to color. If possible, have a helper take individual pictures of each child.
  2. Movie and Snack. Briefly introduce the movie to the children by telling them that they will be watching a story about Snoodle Doo. Ask them to watch for the bad things that the other snoodles place in Snoodle Doo’s backpack and for the good things that one special Snoodle-like character places in his backpack.
  3. Discussion. After the movie, discuss with the children how the other snoodles hurt Snoodle Doo. Ask them to give examples of times that other kids have hurt their feelings. Explain to the children that the special, nice character was like God. Just like he put things in Snoodle Doo’s backpack to make him special, God gives us things that make us unique. Explain that whenever other people make them feel bad, they can always remember the Veggie Tales motto: “God made you special, and He loves you very much.”
  4. Backpack Craft. Ask each child to think of something that God has put in her to make her special. This would be a good time to demonstrate a teacher sample. It should include music, as it will segue into the next activity. For example, “God gave me a love for music, and I can use my music to worship God.” Help the children color and label a picture of how they are special on the white paper behind the flap of their backpack. Place their names on the top sections of the backpacks, and later (if possible) place their pictures on the outside of the flap.
  5. Music Activity: Remind the children of the gift of music and how they can use it to worship God. Allow them to choose an instrument from the music box and instruct them to sit in a circle. Play the class’s favorite songs as they play their instrument along.
  6. Closing: As the parents arrive, help each child share her backpack and what makes her special.

Bulletin Board Idea

  • Prepare a colored picture of the Snoodle Doo color page. Cut out and color Snoodle Doo and staple it to the bulletin board. Place the following label under the picture:

Psalms 139:14

“I praise you because I am fearfully and wonderfully made.”

A Snoodle’s Tale is a story about Snoodle Doo. This snoodle learns that the things God places in his backpack make him special. We shared the things that God gave us to make us special.

  • Add the title “What Has God Put in Your Backpack?” and place the student’s backpacks on the board.
